Exploration and Discovery

Why does a child touch the same object again and again, or keep pushing it? Those attempts help them discover what it is like and what happens when they act on it. Exploration and Discovery looks at how children gain information through direct interaction. Parents can help them notice changes and keep experimenting without rushing to explain every conclusion.

  • Birth–9 months: learning about the world through senses and action. Touching, looking, shaking, and letting go can all create new feedback. Exploration includes people's expressions and responses, not only toys.
  • 9–18 months: acting with a growing expectation. Children increasingly act to create a particular effect and connect an action with its result through repetition.
  • 18 months–3 years: beginning to explain and predict. In addition to noticing change, children begin looking for what caused it and anticipating what might happen if they try again.

After age 3, these observations and experiments remain a foundation for cognitive development and expand into sub-domains such as Scientific Inquiry. This page does not treat age 3 as the end of exploration.

Below are selected skills to notice at specific ages. Age is a developmental reference point; understand each skill alongside what you see in everyday life.

4 months

Uses the senses to examine people and objects, such as mouthing or touching.

What to notice: When encountering a person or object, does your baby keep looking, touching, or using other senses to learn more? Focus on actively gathering sensory information; recognizing a category or describing a discovery is not required.

How to support it: Exploration begins with feedback a baby can directly perceive and uses to become familiar with people and objects. Offer safe, manageable opportunities for contact, follow and respond to your baby's attention, and leave time for their own sensing. Choose and supervise anything used for mouthing with particular care.

Keep in mind: Not every object belongs in the mouth, but exploration also need not be interrupted simply because it has no obvious adult-defined purpose yet.

6 months

Uses a variety of actions to examine people and objects, such as shaking, or dropping.

What to notice: Does your child use different actions with the same object and notice changes created by shaking, dropping, or another movement? Look for self-directed exploration rather than repetition of an adult-prescribed action.

How to support it: Different actions produce different feedback and help your baby discover how an object can be affected. Respond to what they notice, demonstrate one new action when useful, and then wait for them to try.

Keep in mind: Allow safe repetition instead of treating every shake or drop as misbehavior or assigning one correct use to every object.

12 months

Acts intentionally to achieve a goal such as trying to get an adult to do something or trying different ways to reach a toy under a table.

What to notice: Is your child's action directed toward a person, object, or effect they want to approach, with the next action changing in response to feedback? Look for intentional exploration and interaction, not an independently invented complex solution.

How to support it: Acting on an intention helps children learn more about how they affect their surroundings. First understand what your child is trying to do, respond clearly and promptly, and provide necessary support when difficulty stops the exploration. Keep action connected with feedback rather than replacing the child's interest with an adult task.

Keep in mind: If the situation becomes a specific obstacle to solve, Reasoning and Problem-Solving may offer another useful lens.

15 months

Engages in purposeful actions to cause things to happen, such as making splashes in a puddle or rolling a ball to knock over a tower.

What to notice: Does your child deliberately repeat an action to make a particular effect happen again? Unlike being surprised after an accidental result, this skill involves some expectation before acting.

How to support it: Repeated experience helps a child connect an action with an effect and then act purposefully to create it. Put the connection into brief words, let your child operate it and verify the result again, and preserve their choice about whether to continue.

Keep in mind: Do not let repeated adult demonstrations replace direct experience, and do not require a complete causal sentence.

2 years (24 months)

Observes and experiments with how things work,

What to notice: Does your child look closely at a change, try an action, and continue investigating how something works? Focus on gaining information through action; a finished product or correct explanation is not required.

How to support it: Exploration increasingly includes observing, trying, and observing again, with feedback generating new questions. Follow the phenomenon your child wants to understand, demonstrate how to notice a change, ask only a few open questions, and wait.

Keep in mind: Avoid steering every activity toward one answer or explaining the whole mechanism before your child has room to continue experimenting.

Identifies the cause of an observed outcome, such as the tower fell over because it was built too high.

What to notice: After a result occurs, can your child indicate a possible cause through words, pointing, or action? Look for a causal connection rather than treating repetition of an adult's explanation as understanding.

How to support it: Finding a cause requires connecting the action, conditions, and change that just occurred. Help your child review what happened, receive their explanation seriously, and compare observable evidence together.

Keep in mind: The aim is a reasoned understanding of the change, not an immediate complete scientific account—and not every event that happened first should be presented as the cause.

Predicts outcomes of actions or events, such as turning the faucet will make water come out.

What to notice: Before something happens, does your child speak or act in a way that shows an expected result? Unlike explaining a cause afterward, this asks whether prior experience is being used to predict.

How to support it: Familiar cause-and-effect experience can support an expectation before the next action. Pause naturally so your child can guess or prepare, then observe the actual result together. If the prediction differs, help compare the relevant clues rather than treating it as failure.

Keep in mind: Keep conditions understandable instead of changing them deliberately so past experience becomes unusable.
