Reasoning and Problem-Solving
Predict what may happen, try it, and see what the result supports—Reasoning and Problem-Solving in science is about how children seek an answer, not how many scientific facts they remember. Parents can follow a real question and help children find information, make a prediction, test it, and explain a discovery in their own way.
- 3–4 years: turning a question into a test with support. Making a prediction, joining a simple investigation, and describing the result allow an idea to meet evidence.
- 4–5 years: giving inquiry a stronger basis. Drawing on experience, gathering and organizing information, and comparing results with expectations gradually make a conclusion more than a guess.
This pathway builds on Reasoning and Problem-Solving before age 3. The specific skills here begin after age 3; a child does not need to design a complete experiment before beginning to investigate.
Below are selected skills to notice at specific ages. Age is a developmental reference point; understand each skill alongside what you see in everyday life.
3½ years (42 months)
With adult support, engages in simple investigations and experiments, such as building a "bridge" out of classroom materials and seeing how many dolls it will hold before it collapses.
What to notice: Does your child take part in the operation and use what actually happens to address a question? Focus on firsthand investigation rather than only watching an adult demonstrate, hearing the conclusion, or repeating the steps.
How to support it: Inquiry lets children test an idea through action, and an engaging question often supports participation better than a complete formal procedure. Begin with something your child genuinely wants to know, demonstrate safe handling, help them notice the result, and provide a chance to try.
Keep in mind: Do not require independent control of variables or define success only as obtaining the adult's expected answer.
4 years (48 months)
With adult support and modeling, makes simple predictions, such as "I think that the golf ball will be heavier than the ping pong ball."
What to notice: With modeling and support, is your child willing to state an expectation before the result appears? The focus is making a prediction, not being correct every time or repeating an adult answer.
How to support it: Prediction connects an existing impression with the observation that comes next. Model what evidence your own idea is based on, invite other possibilities from your child, and then examine the result together.
Keep in mind: Do not correct an untested idea immediately or turn the question into guessing the answer in the adult's mind; leave room to revise through actual evidence.
Draws conclusions and provides simple descriptions of results. For example, an adult suggests counting how many dolls can be supported by a bridge before it breaks and along with the children counts, "One, two, three dolls. What happened when we put on the next doll?" A child says, "The bridge broke!"
What to notice: Can your child state a simple conclusion from the actual result and identify a change they observed? The conclusion should come from what happened; formal terminology or a complete report is not required.
How to support it: Forming a conclusion means reviewing what was done, what was observed, and what the information suggests. Help organize clear observations, invite your child to describe them, and use a small follow-up question to connect them when needed.
Keep in mind: Avoid summarizing all meaning for the child or generalizing the result of one investigation to every situation.
4½ years (54 months)
Asks more complex questions about a phenomenon, event, or statement. (Questions should be able to be answered through an investigation, such as "What do plants need to grow?" or "What countries do the children in our class come from?")
What to notice: Can your child's question be explored by observation, investigation, or testing? Complexity does not mean sentence length; it means that the question points toward information that can be sought.
How to support it: As questions become investigable, curiosity can lead into purposeful searching and testing. Receive the original question seriously, help clarify what your child wants to find out, and discuss ways to learn more.
Keep in mind: Do not replace it only with a question that sounds more scientific to the adult, and do not treat a book answer as the endpoint of every inquiry.
Uses background knowledge and experiences to make predictions and come up with solutions, such as "I think that plants need water to grow," or "I think adding yellow paint to purple will make brown."
What to notice: Does your child use something previously known or experienced to explain an expectation or choice of method? Look for a prediction with a basis rather than its accuracy.
How to support it: Knowledge and experience offer clues for a new question but still need to be checked against actual results. Help your child recall a related experience, listen as they connect the reason with the proposed approach, and provide an opportunity to test and revise.
Keep in mind: Do not treat prior experience as a guarantee or decide the answer for the child because the reason is incomplete.
Uses more complex ways (both senses and simple tools) to gather and record data, such as with adult support, makes a graph that shows children's favorite snacks or the number of children from different countries.
What to notice: Does your child help choose or use a way to collect and preserve information that can later be reviewed and compared? Focus on the record serving the inquiry, not a beautiful chart or neat handwriting.
How to support it: When there is more information, it needs to be organized before a child can compare and judge. Demonstrate how drawings, marks, or a simple table correspond with actual findings, and support your child in recording and checking.
Keep in mind: An adult may help with writing while preserving the child's understanding of what the information means; making a chart should not become a craft project detached from the question.
With increasing independence, analyzes and interprets data and draws conclusions, such as summarizing results of investigation, constructing explanations, and verbalizing cause and effect relationships.
What to notice: Can your child organize several results and explain why they reached a conclusion? Focus on the connection between evidence and conclusion rather than repeating a familiar science fact.
How to support it: Analysis connects separate observations into an evidence-based explanation and allows the result to differ from an original prediction. Review the information together, compare similarities and differences, invite reasons, and notice what remains uncertain.
Keep in mind: Do not ignore conflicting results to protect a correct conclusion or require every cause to be explained at once; increase the child's role in interpretation gradually.
5 years (60 months)
Uses other sources besides adults to gather information, such as books or other experts.
What to notice: In addition to asking a nearby adult, is your child willing to use books or find a person who knows about the question? Focus on broadening sources; this does not mean they can judge the reliability of every source independently.
How to support it: Different questions call for different resources, and searching shows children that answers do not come from only one person. Model how to choose a source suited to the question, help understand and compare what it provides, and connect it with firsthand observation.
Keep in mind: Being able to search is not the same as verification, and looking something up should not replace an experiment that requires direct testing.
With increasing independence, engages in some parts of conducting complex investigations or experiments. For example, implements steps and uses materials to explore testable questions, such as "Do plants need water to grow?" by planting seeds and giving water to some but not to others.
What to notice: Can your child take reasonably independent responsibility for one part of a more complex investigation and understand how it relates to the question? They do not need to design, carry out, and explain the entire investigation alone.
How to support it: A more complex investigation connects question, method, and observation, with children gradually taking on parts of the work. Help plan a safe, workable comparison, then let your child carry it out, observe, and propose an adjustment.
Keep in mind: Changing one condition is an example in the canonical skill, not a requirement that every activity become controlled-variable training; the important point is that the test helps address the question.
