Counting and Cardinality

Reciting one through ten and knowing how many objects are on the table are related but different abilities. Counting and Cardinality helps children connect number words with individual objects, the quantity of a whole set, and written numerals—and use numbers to compare quantities and describe order. Everyday sharing and games make those connections visible.

  • 3–4 years: moving from number words to how many altogether. Number sequence, one-to-one counting, recognizing small quantities at a glance, and comparing how many can be noticed separately across different activities.
  • 4–5 years: using quantity understanding more broadly. Longer number sequences, written numerals, ordinal position, and recording quantities let children express mathematical relationships in several ways.

Before age 3, children already build foundations through expressing, comparing, and manipulating quantities; see Emergent Mathematical Thinking for that earlier path. The specific skills here begin after age 3, but children do not need to wait until then to encounter quantity.

Below are selected skills to notice at specific ages. Age is a developmental reference point; understand each skill alongside what you see in everyday life.

3½ years (42 months)

Says or signs some number words in sequence (up to 10), starting with one.

What to notice: Can your child express number words in order through speech or gesture? Look at the sequence itself; this does not show that they can count ten objects accurately or understand the total quantity.

How to support it: A stable number sequence provides the verbal or gestural order later used in one-to-one counting. Model it naturally in rhythmic games and real counting, invite your child to continue a familiar portion, and restart together after an order error.

Keep in mind: Do not focus only on reaching a larger number; the sequence also needs to become connected with actual quantities in other settings.

Begins to recognize the number of small objects in groups without counting (referred to as "subitizing").

What to notice: When your child sees a small set, can they say or indicate how many without counting each object? Focus on recognizing the quantity of a small group directly, not memorizing one fixed card pattern.

How to support it: Recognizing small quantities as a whole offers another route to number sense without always counting from one. Present clear small groups with manageable variation, let your child look and judge first, and then check together.

Keep in mind: Speed is not the main standard, and rapid flash cards that force guessing do not help quantities acquire stable meaning.

Begins to coordinate verbal counting with objects by pointing to or moving objects for small groups of objects laid in a line (referred to as one-to-one correspondence).

What to notice: Does your child pair one number word with one object, keeping pointing or moving in step with the count? Notice skipped and double-counted objects rather than listening only for the final number.

How to support it: One-to-one counting coordinates action with the number sequence so each object is counted once. Demonstrate slowly, arrange objects clearly, and reposition together if the count becomes confused.

Keep in mind: Give your child room to adjust instead of counting for them to secure a correct answer, and do not require an explanation of the total quantity at the same time.

Begins to accurately count and compare objects that are about the same size and are in small groups with adult assistance, such as counts a pile of two blocks and a pile of four, and determines whether the piles have the same or different numbers of blocks.

What to notice: With help, can your child count two groups separately and decide whether the quantities are the same or different? Look for counting as the basis for comparison rather than guessing from which group takes up more space.

How to support it: Counting gives quantity comparison a checkable basis. Begin with objects of similar size that are easy to see, confirm the two counts, and then discuss which group has more or whether they match. If conclusions differ, recount or pair objects one to one.

Keep in mind: Do not simply announce the answer or add heavy visual distractions when the relationship is still new.

4 years (48 months)

Begins to understand that the last number represents how many objects are in a group (referred to as "cardinality").

What to notice: After counting, can your child use the last number to answer how many there are altogether rather than treat it only as the name of the final object? Accurate pointing and understanding the total should be observed separately.

How to support it: Cardinality connects the process of counting individual objects with the quantity of the set. After your child finishes counting, summarize the total clearly and show the same quantity with different objects so the number continues to mean “how many.” Allow recounting to check.

Keep in mind: Do not demand an immediate answer or assume that reciting numbers makes this connection unnecessary.

4½ years (54 months)

Counts verbally or signs to at least 20 by ones.

What to notice: Can your child express at least twenty numbers in a reasonably continuous sequence? This is still an extension of number order; counting or comparing twenty objects may not be equally fluent.

How to support it: A longer number sequence extends stable links from a familiar portion. Continue and model it naturally within real games, helping only a little where your child gets stuck, so numbers are understood as following one another.

Keep in mind: Do not treat the length of recitation as a total score for mathematics; preserve opportunities to use numbers for actual quantity problems.

Counts to determine and compare number amounts in more challenging settings, such as when the larger group's objects are smaller in size, such as buttons, compared with the smaller group's objects that are larger in size, such as markers.

What to notice: Can your child use counting to decide which of two groups has more, rather than rely only on object size or the area covered? Visual differences can help you check what their judgment is based on.

How to support it: Quantity needs to become distinguishable from object size and arrangement. Count and verify together, then gradually vary the objects or layout so your child can discover that a group that looks larger may not contain more. Keep room for explanation and checking.

Keep in mind: One mistaken intuitive judgment does not mean the child lacks the concept, and correcting only the final answer misses the reasoning.

Understands that written numbers represent quantities of objects, such as associating a number of objects with a written numeral 0–5.

What to notice: When your child sees a written numeral, can they connect it with the corresponding quantity? Naming a numeral and forming its shape are separate from knowing how many it represents.

How to support it: A written numeral preserves quantity as visible, shareable information. Match numerals with real objects while counting, distributing, or playing, and let your child choose and check the correspondence.

Keep in mind: Give the symbol a purpose before making neat writing a prerequisite, and do not omit the quantity connection simply because your child recognizes the shape.

5 years (60 months)

Identifies and uses numbers related to order or position from first to tenth.

What to notice: Does your child use first, second, and similar ordinal terms to describe a position in an order rather than answer how many there are altogether? Focus on number as order, while also distinguishing it from spatial directions such as in front and behind.

How to support it: The same number system can describe quantity and locate a position in sequence. Use ordinal terms naturally in lines, turns, and sequences, make the starting point clear, and invite your child to find the corresponding position. Check again when the starting point changes.

Keep in mind: Avoid limiting learning to reciting first through tenth or treating ordinal language as addition and subtraction.

Uses information symbols, such as a tally, to represent numerals.

What to notice: Does your child use one mark for each item in a quantity and later read the marks to determine how many? This is correspondence between symbol and quantity; standard Arabic numerals are not required.

How to support it: Informal marks can preserve a quantity so it can still be checked when the objects are no longer present. Demonstrate one clear recording method, learn what your child's own symbols mean, and verify together what each mark represents.

Keep in mind: The record needs to be understandable and useful; conventional numeral formation should not come before quantity meaning.
