Operations and Algebraic Thinking

What happens when one more is added? What should come next in this repeating arrangement? Operations and Algebraic Thinking includes understanding increases and decreases in quantity as well as finding repeated patterns. Letting children see, manipulate, and explain a change before asking them to memorize an equation makes it easier to understand which part they actually grasp.

  • 3–4 years: starting with visible changes and repetition. Children can verify combining and removing small groups and simple alternating patterns with their own hands during play.
  • 4–5 years: representing change in different ways and finding shared structure. Fingers, pictures, and objects can all represent a quantity change; a small repeated unit can also be translated into sounds or actions and extended.

Below are selected skills to notice at specific ages. Age is a developmental reference point; understand each skill alongside what you see in everyday life.

3½ years (42 months)

Recognizes a simple pattern.

What to notice: Does your child notice that the same relationship repeats in an arrangement or action sequence? Focus on detecting repetition rather than liking the colors or placing materials in a row.

How to support it: A repeating pattern helps children find a stable relationship within change. Present a clear, simple repetition, demonstrate how to compare neighboring parts, and wait for your child to point it out, continue it, or respond through movement.

Keep in mind: Avoid adding many changes at once or assuming that memorizing the visual string means understanding its repeating structure.

Duplicates and extends ABABAB patterns.

What to notice: Can your child continue an alternating relationship rather than only copy the whole segment they see? The focus is applying the same rule to a new part.

How to support it: Copying and extending require preserving the repeating order and predicting the next item. Make the pattern clear, demonstrate a short portion, and then hand over the continuation. If the placement differs, review the sequence together.

Keep in mind: Do not give each next answer or judge only neatness; the important question is whether the same relationship continues.

4 years (48 months)

Begins to add and subtract very small collections of objects with adult support. For example, the parent says, "You have three grapes and get one more. How many in all?" Child counts out three, then counts out one more, then counts all four: "One, two, three, four. I have four!"

What to notice: After some objects are added or taken away, can your child confirm the new total with support? Focus on what changed in the quantity; mental calculation or a written equation is not required.

How to support it: Addition and subtraction can first be understood through combining and separating real objects, and recounting is a valid method. Make the before-and-after quantities clear, let your child manipulate and verify them, and connect number words with the actual change.

Keep in mind: Do not rush to prohibit fingers or counting from one, and do not treat a memorized number fact as sufficient understanding.

4½ years (54 months)

Represents addition and subtraction in different ways, such as with fingers, objects, and drawings.

What to notice: Can your child use fingers, objects, or a drawing to represent the same increase or decrease? Focus on different forms expressing the same change rather than how realistic a picture looks.

How to support it: Multiple representations help children separate a quantity change from one particular set of objects. Make the change with real objects clear first, demonstrate another way to show it, and invite your child to explain and check. Personal marks are acceptable.

Keep in mind: Standard written equations are not a prerequisite, and representation should not become copying the adult's drawing without understanding.

Creates simple repeating patterns in different forms, such as with objects, numbers, sounds, and movements.

What to notice: Does your child intentionally create a sequence that can repeat and continue it with objects, sounds, or actions? Focus on establishing a rule rather than free variation or random repetition.

How to support it: Creating a pattern means establishing a relationship and applying it repeatedly. Offer several forms of expression, understand the rule your child intends, and continue it together; if the sequence becomes inconsistent, invite another look.

Keep in mind: Encourage translating the same structure into another medium without requiring complexity or replacing the child's rule with an adult-designed arrangement.

Extends patterns, such as making an eight block tower of the same pattern that was demonstrated with four blocks.

What to notice: Can your child extend a visible repeating relationship so a longer construction preserves the same pattern? The focus is not merely increasing from four blocks to eight, but carrying the relationship forward too.

How to support it: Extension applies a local repeating rule to a part that has not yet appeared. Help identify the relationship already repeating, then let your child add and check. If it becomes unclear, compare a shorter segment together.

Keep in mind: Do not count any increase in height or amount as pattern extension or direct every addition until only the finished appearance remains.

5 years (60 months)

Identifies the core unit of sequentially repeating patterns, such as color in a sequence of alternating red and blue blocks.

What to notice: Can your child identify the small unit that repeats rather than only name the next item? In a red-blue alternation, the focus is seeing red-blue as the unit that returns, not simply naming two colors.

How to support it: Identifying the core unit reveals that a whole pattern is made by repeating a smaller group. Circle, group, or read the unit rhythmically to make it visible, then invite your child to preserve the same structure with other materials.

Keep in mind: Avoid asking only “what comes next” or requiring algebraic terms; the repeating unit itself should become clear.
