Emergent Mathematical Thinking

Early math begins before a child can count. Noticing whether there are one or several objects, discovering what fits inside, and grouping similar things all help children make sense of quantity, space, and categories. Parents can make these relationships visible in everyday life without reducing early math to recognizing numerals or reciting number words.

  • 0–9 months: Notice quantity and movement. Seeing more than one possible target and following where an object goes build direct experience with number and space.
  • 9–18 months: Discover relationships through action. Children begin to notice how objects can be arranged, which things belong together, and what changes when something is added or disappears.
  • 18 months–3 years: Use comparison, sorting, and quantity to express ideas. Children gradually use quantity words or gestures, try ordering and sorting, and begin to count. Reciting numbers and understanding quantity still need to be observed separately.

After age 3, these foundations continue through four math sub-domains: Counting and Cardinality, Geometry and Spatial Sense, Measurement and Data, and Operations and Algebraic Thinking. They are not four subjects to teach early, but different ways children learn to understand quantity, space, and relationships.

Below are selected skills to notice at specific ages. Age is a developmental reference point; understand each skill alongside what you see in everyday life.

4 months

Explores or examines objects and watches objects when they move.

What to notice: When an object moves, does your baby follow it with their eyes and keep looking for it after it stops? Notice whether they track its path, not whether they can name the object.

How to support it: Tracking movement builds experience with changes in an object's position. Follow what your baby is already watching and move it clearly and slowly enough for them to follow and find again. Respond when they look or reach.

Keep in mind: Avoid changing targets too quickly or turning tracking into a speed test.

6 months

Attends to quantity in play with objects, such as reaching or looking for more than one object.

What to notice: When more than one object is in view, does your baby keep looking or reach for another one? This shows attention to quantity, not yet an understanding of numerals or an exact comparison.

How to support it: Early number sense grows through direct experience: there can be another object beyond the first, and removing one changes what remains. Offer safe chances to notice several objects and respond when your baby looks for more.

Keep in mind: There is no need to turn this into counting practice or ask for a correct answer.

12 months

Explores how things move through space, such as a ball thrown under a table.

What to notice: Does your child watch an object roll, pass through something, or land elsewhere, then look for where it went? Notice their exploration of movement and destination, not only the act of throwing.

How to support it: By acting on objects, children connect their actions with changes in space. Follow the destination that interests your child, look for the object together, and try again.

Keep in mind: Add brief spatial words when useful, but keep the focus on noticing movement rather than hitting a target or learning a physics explanation.

15 months

Uses a few basic words to refer to change in the amount of objects, such as asking for "more" or saying "all gone" when a plate is empty.

What to notice: When your child uses words such as more or all gone, do the words relate to an actual increase, decrease, or empty container? Notice whether the word carries meaning rather than merely repeating an adult sound.

How to support it: Quantity words gain meaning in real situations. Put the change your child notices into simple words, interpret their request or observation positively, and respond.

Keep in mind: Gestures and words can work together; saying the word correctly should never be a condition for meeting a reasonable need, and more does not yet mean an exact number.

Explores how things fit together or how they fit with other things.

What to notice: As your child handles objects, do they try placing them near, on, or inside one another and adjust their positions? Notice how objects fit together, not whether they can name the spatial relationship or succeed on the first try.

How to support it: Children learn spatial relationships by placing and adjusting objects. Let your child try combinations freely. If they get stuck, demonstrate one small change in position, then return the task to them.

Keep in mind: Briefly describe what happened, but do not place every object correctly for them.

Matches objects by similar characteristics, such as matching shapes with openings in a shape-sorting box.

What to notice: Can your child look for a pair based on a visible similarity rather than simply fetching what an adult points to? Matching is different from naming the color, shape, or feature.

How to support it: Matching helps children extract a shared feature from different objects. Make similarities and differences easy to see, demonstrate how to compare, then leave room to search and adjust.

Keep in mind: Describe the feature they used, but avoid adding several sorting rules at once or making naming a prerequisite.

Matches objects by related characteristics, such as by putting a toy bottle with a baby doll.

What to notice: Does your child put together objects that may not look alike but have related uses? This is matching by a familiar life connection, which differs from matching by appearance.

How to support it: Children can organize objects around a familiar shared use. Let related objects work together in real routines and pretend play, observe your child's intended connection, and briefly name it.

Keep in mind: Accept other sensible pairings instead of correcting only by appearance.

2 years (24 months)

Use other words referring to quantity, such as a little, too much, or a lot.

What to notice: When your child says a little, a lot, or too much, do the words relate to the visible amount and what they need? These relative words do not yet have to represent fixed quantities.

How to support it: Quantity language helps children describe and negotiate needs before they can count accurately. Use amount words naturally while sharing, serving, and putting things away.

Keep in mind: Respond to what your child means and make the difference visible by adding or removing items rather than turning the words into vocabulary drills.

Identifies "more" or "less" with a small number of items without needing to count them.

What to notice: With two small, clearly different groups, can your child recognize which has more or fewer without counting one by one? This is an intuitive comparison, not proof that they know the exact difference.

How to support it: Intuitive comparison lets children feel a quantity relationship before connecting it to counting. Offer contrasts that are easy to see, invite your child to choose or distribute the objects, and place the groups side by side when helpful.

Keep in mind: Avoid adding distracting differences in object size or spacing.

Fits together or inside other things, such as putting smaller objects into a small box and larger objects into a large box.

What to notice: When trying to fit or join objects, does your child adjust for size and available space? Notice the spatial judgment involved, not only whether their fingers can push a piece into place.

How to support it: Nesting and joining objects reveal relationships among size, direction, and space. Offer several workable combinations, first watch how your child adjusts, and help through comparison or a partial demonstration.

Keep in mind: Let the actual result support understanding instead of matching every piece for them or treating force as a solution.

Sorts objects into two groups based on a single characteristic (color, shape, size, etc.), such as grouping toy animals separately from toy cars, or putting red socks and white socks in different piles.

What to notice: Can your child sort objects into two groups using one clear feature? The important point is keeping the same rule, not considering color, shape, and size all at once.

How to support it: Sorting helps children find a common feature across different objects and use it to organize a group. Make one observable rule clear, demonstrate comparison, and check the groups together.

Keep in mind: If your child's choice differs, first ask what rule they used, then help them apply one rule consistently.

2½ years (30 months)

Use some number words or signs to identify small amounts, such as using fingers to show how old they are.

What to notice: When your child uses a number word or fingers, are they expressing a real quantity such as a small group or their age? Notice the link between quantity and expression, not only how far they can recite.

How to support it: Number words and fingers gradually become tools for expressing quantity. In situations where the amount matters, model matching one word or gesture to each object, accept an incomplete attempt, and add the clearer expression.

Keep in mind: Do not equate memorized counting with complete quantity understanding.

Predicts or anticipates how things move through space.

What to notice: Before a moving object arrives, does your child look toward, wait at, or reach for where they expect it to go? Notice anticipation of movement rather than how skillfully they catch it.

How to support it: Repeated experiences with movement help children use what they know to predict what comes next. Continue a movement game they enjoy, let them anticipate, then compare the actual path.

Keep in mind: Point out a useful clue when needed, but do not require an abstract explanation or remove the chance to observe by suddenly speeding up.

Orders some objects by size.

What to notice: Can your child compare object sizes and arrange them in an order? Notice whether size relationships guide the sequence, not simply whether the objects form a neat line.

How to support it: Ordering requires comparing neighboring objects while keeping the same relationship across the row. Use a manageable number of objects with clear size differences, demonstrate a side-by-side comparison, and let your child adjust.

Keep in mind: If they hesitate, help with one pair rather than completing the entire sequence.

3 years (36 months)

Counts small number of objects, sometimes counting the same object twice or using numbers out of order.

What to notice: Does your child apply number words to individual objects, even if they skip, repeat, or mix up the sequence? This differs from reciting numbers, but does not yet mean they consistently understand the total.

How to support it: Counting develops as the number-word sequence and one-to-one tracking begin to work together. Count slowly in a useful situation while pointing to or moving each object. If something is missed, check again together rather than correcting only the final answer.

Keep in mind: Support the attempt while staying honest that accurate counting is still developing.
